Week 6-Post 1: Repairing Arguments

Repairing Argument Example:

All babies in the world wear diapers. Therefore Ricky wears diapers.

Analysis: According to the text it is inferring that “Ricky is a baby” which is making the argument valid or strong. What this argument is also inferring that “Ricky is a baby” is because Ricky wears diapers. After the argument is done making a light describing that “Ricky is a baby” since he wears diapers. Once the statement “Ricky is a baby” is added to the end of the argument makes the statement a little more clearer. Also if this last statement is not added onto the argument it would not be a clear argument and the only person who would know that Ricky is an actual baby would be the person who is stating the argument. Therefore it leaves the listener to infer that Ricky is a baby because the argument does not clearly state who and what is the baby. The argument should only be corrected as needed.

  1. I agree with the premise you added to support this example of a weak argument. The example here, “All babies in the world wear diapers. Therefore, Rickey wears diapers,” is unclear because we do not know if Ricky is a baby or not. One would assume that an unstated premise was used here and that Ricky is a baby because he is wearing a diaper. The only other people that wear some sort or diaper in the world are some senior citizens with bladder problems, but it is safe to assume that this is not the case here. By adding the phrase, “Ricky is a baby,” the argument becomes much clearer, and therefore, stronger.

  2. I agree with the addition you made to the weak argument. “All babies in the world wear diapers. Ricky is a baby. Therefore, Rickey wears diapers,” This is a stronger statement. It makes the argument stronger which satisfies the criteria that the argument has become valid. Without the changes, the argument is unclear. Ricky might be a baby, but he might be a person with bladder problems; and there really are grown up diapers. But adding that “Ricky is a baby” eliminates the uncertainty of he might be a baby. To the readers who don’t know Ricky this makes it clearer and therefore valid.

  3. I agree with the two posters from above. "All babies in the world wear diapers. Therefore Ricky wears diapers." This is a pretty weak argument because the sentence doesn't say if Ricky is a baby or a senior citizen who wears those adult diapers. By adding in "Ricky is a baby" at the end of the sentence makes the sentence so much stronger by taking out all the confusion in the sentence. "All babies in the world wear diapers. Therefore Ricky wears diapers because Ricky is a baby." By adding in the last part of the sentence the sentence becomes much more clear.
